Ohio CME requirements for physicians
Ohio MDs and DOs generally need 50 hours every two years, including a Board-approved hour on the duty to report misconduct. Physicians who own or provide care in a covered pain-management clinic have an additional topic requirement within that total.

50 hours per two-year registration period
- Renewal cycle
- Biennial renewal. Use the expiration on your Ohio license record to set the end of your reporting window.
- Accepted credit types
- Use the approved pathways in OAC 4731-10-02, including qualifying AMA or AOA Category 1 CME. The rule also addresses approved training and limited volunteer-service credit; ordinary Category 2 study is not the standard renewal pathway.

MD requirements
Duty to report misconduct
At least one hour of Board-approved training every renewal period. It counts toward the 50-hour total. Confirm that the specific activity is approved for Ohio’s duty-to-report requirement.

Count approved hours within your own renewal window
Ohio’s rule identifies the education pathways that count toward renewal. Check the accreditation on each certificate before adding it to your total. A course may be clinically valuable without qualifying for Ohio renewal.
The duty-to-report hour is part of the 50 hours. A generic ethics course does not automatically satisfy the Board-approved duty-to-report requirement.

The pain-clinic rule depends on your practice setting
The 20-hour pain-medicine requirement applies to physician owners and physicians providing care at a pain-management clinic covered by the Ohio rule. It is not a universal 20-hour requirement for every physician who writes an opioid prescription.
The rule includes a definition of a covered clinic and exclusions for certain facilities. Confirm whether your practice falls within that definition, then retain documentation showing pain-medicine content and the required addiction component.
First renewal, inactive practice and hardship
For a first or shortened registration period, confirm the hours assigned to your license directly with the Board before relying on a reduced total. Use the physician rules and your license record when planning that first renewal.
Retirement or practice outside Ohio does not itself remove the CME obligation when you continue to renew the license. A CME waiver is a separate Board decision.
A CME waiver for qualifying illness, accident or absence must be requested at least 60 days before the end of the registration period. Under the waiver rule, submit the renewal application only after the Board grants that waiver.

Records and use across renewal periods
Keep certificates, activity dates, categories and a record of your Board-approved duty-to-report training. Ohio law provides for random CME audits. Physicians subject to the pain-clinic rule should also preserve evidence of the qualifying content.
Hours used to make up a deficiency from a previous registration period cannot also count toward the current period. Ask the Board before banking surplus hours for a later cycle; do not assume that an old certificate belongs in the current 50-hour total.

Current rules and recent changes
The current physician CME rule requires 50 hours and the recurring duty-to-report hour. The pain-management-clinic rule reviewed for this guide has an effective date of January 31, 2026.
This guide was reviewed October 13, 2026. Federal DEA training remains a separate obligation tied to DEA registration, even when a qualifying course is also eligible for Ohio CME.

Questions physicians ask next
Do Ohio MDs and DOs have the same general CME total?
Yes. Both use the 50-hour requirement for each two-year registration period under the physician CME rule.
Does every Ohio physician need duty-to-report education?
The CME rule requires at least one hour of Board-approved duty-to-report education every renewal period. It is included in the general total.
Does an ordinary ethics course meet the duty-to-report requirement?
Only if the specific activity is Board approved for that requirement. Check the approval before enrolling.
Who needs the 20-hour pain-medicine requirement?
It applies to physician owners and physicians providing care at a pain-management clinic covered by OAC 4731-29-01. Review the rule’s facility definition and exclusions.
Are the pain-clinic hours added on top of 50?
No. Qualifying pain-medicine hours count toward the renewal total, provided the category and content requirements are met.
Am I exempt if I practice only outside Ohio?
Practicing elsewhere does not itself exempt a physician who renews an Ohio license. Retirement alone is also not an automatic CME exemption.
Can deficiency hours count for two periods?
No. Hours used to cure a prior-period CME deficiency cannot also be counted in the current period.
